Memorable Quotes

"Freddie King was a big influence on me. I jammed with him and he played a 340. Freddie would just play so hard he'd embarrass me 'cause I sounded like a wimp. He inspired me to play hard, to play like a 300 lb. man."

-- Dickey Betts

Morse coda

For The Boston Globe

For years, concert promoter Don Law suffered the slings and arrows of Steve Morse, the Globe rock critic who just retired after 31 years. Monday, Law got a measure of revenge, playfully skewering our man Morse at a party that was equal parts roast and toast. ''Steve got it as right as he thought it was," Clear Channel's big cheese said with a smile. Dubbed ''The Steve Morse Review," the invite-only affair at the Paradise included testimonials -- some spoken, some videotaped, some e-mailed -- from such luminaries as Bruce Springsteen, Peter Wolf, Jimmy Buffett, Aerosmith, Billy Joel, and James Taylor. (Wolf was in the house.)

How death has left its mark on rock music

It's no secret that there's always been a cultish obsession with death in rock music.

In song, death is the theme that made Black Sabbath scary and gave Jay-Z street cred. In life, it turned fallen rockers such as Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. into secular saints.

In recent months, death has been a common topic among rock fans. We lost pioneering deejay Scott Muni last week. A few weeks earlier, Johnny Ramone succumbed to cancer, becoming the third member of the original Ramones quartet to die since 2001.

All Topics Man who mooned judge jailed

07:37 AM CDT on Friday, June 25, 2004

Associated Press

MILFORD, Conn. - A man who dropped his pants in court and mooned a judge was jailed for six months on a contempt charge.

Richard Brown, 38, shouted insults and obscenities after Superior Court Judge Patrick Carroll told him to address the court as "sir." He dropped the pants of his two-piece prison jumpsuit and pointed his rear end at the judge.

Brown continued to shout taunts and expletives Wednesday as he was restrained by state marshals and forcibly escorted through a side door to a holding cell.

Brown's outburst came during a plea hearing. He was expected to plead guilty to armed robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery in exchange for a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

After the outburst, the prosecutor withdrew the plea agreement.
